What Is Kemetic Yoga?

One of the things I do and teach is yoga. I am actually a certified Kemetic Yoga Teacher in the Yogaskills Method, taught by Master Yiser Hotep. I say `Master` with great appreciation and respect in regard to his mastery of Kemetic Yoga and teaching it to others.

Anyway, Kemetic Yoga is based on the hieroglyphics on the walls of the Pyramids in Egypt. There are pictures of specific yoga poses and sequences. Several are different from the traditional yoga asanas of India. Others are similar. The Yogaskills Kemetic Yoga system also includes a few teachings from the Iyengar School of yoga practice. However the Yogaskills Kemetic Yoga System is a unique system like no other - based on the Kemetic Practice of yoga which is understood to be African in origin.

It is based on the importance of three things primarily: the breath as cosmic life-force, the geometric progression of the poses which are assumed by the body, and the movement of energy in and around the body which results from the first two aspects of the practice mentioned.

The word `yoga` means to join or yoke together` - as in the joining of body and soul. In Kemetic yoga the basis for this union is the breath. As a result, much focus and attention is given to a consistent practice of full abdominal breathing before, during and following the practice of the asanas. It is through the breath that body and soul become one and this allows the energy of life to flow throughout the body bringing healing, rejuvenation and spiritual power. The yoga poses offer specific rejuvenation to various parts of the body, mind and emotions over time. The geometic progression of the poses, meaning that the more advanced poses become more geometically complex, assist the practioner to embody deeper levels of connection with the cosmic energies of which the poses are an expression.

In general, when practiced consistently over time, Kemetic Yoga provides health and healing.

For people of African descent (which is actually everybody on the planet), Kemetic Yoga speaks to deep memories in our DNA which bring forth a level of wholeness and peace which cannot be taken away as we reclaim our genetic capcities for fulfilling God`s purpose for us in the world.

For example, I served in a role for a number of years that had several personal challenges and definite marginalization. I continued in the role for the sake of others - some of whom had an idea of my work on their behalf and some who never have and never will.

There was one Kemetic Yoga pose that kept my body and soul, and therefore my mind - together. That pose is the MAAT-Ka. Intellectually, I don`t know all the reasons why this pose brought such stability to my being, especially the times when there was turmoil all around me. What I know is that when I practiced this pose and my other Kemetic Yoga poses something was ‘righted` and I was able to move back into the world with stamina and peace.

I`ve been practicing yoga for more than 30 years. I`m convinced that it is the reason I am still able to do the things I can to today.

What I teach are the basic Kemetic Yoga poses - those that are suitable for all ages and most physical conditions.
